New courses help inventors move from patent protection to market validation, funding readiness, and commercialization.

SAN DIEGO and BOSTON — April 30, 2026 — Invent Together today announced the launch of Creating Value From Your Patent, a new, free online course in The Inventor’s Patent Academy (TIPA) e-learning platform. The course focuses on the often-overlooked business side of inventing: how to move from patent protection to real-world adoption, investment readiness, and the creation of durable economic value.

While patents establish valuable legal rights, many startups and small businesses face the hardest steps of the journey: validating demand, accessing venture capital, building the right team, developing market-ready prototypes, aligning IP decisions with business strategy, and choosing a credible path to market. Creating Value From Your Patent is designed to close that gap with practical frameworks, decision tools, and guidance informed by experienced educators and the lived experiences of innovators who successfully commercialized their inventions.

“A patent can protect an invention, but it doesn’t automatically create a business opportunity. This new course is a natural next step for TIPA as we help inventors become successful entrepreneurs, create new jobs, and contribute to our country’s economy.”

— Holly Fechner, Invent Together Executive Director

The course was developed in collaboration with Invent Together’s founding partner, Qualcomm Incorporated, a global leader in telecommunications research and innovation with more than 200,000 patents and applications worldwide, and New England Invents, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit that helps inventors turn creative ideas into tangible products.

“Strengthening the U.S. innovation economy depends on more than great ideas—it depends on helping more people understand how to protect those ideas and transform them into products, companies, and jobs. This project supports the broader public interest by expanding practical IP and commercialization know-how – something that is essential to U.S. competitiveness and GDP growth.”

– Laurie Self, SVP & Counsel, Government Affairs, QUALCOMM

The course was authored by George Peters, CEO, and Morris Newman, VP of Project Development at New England Invents. Additional guidance on course creation was provided by Erin Kelley, Founder of Hexalign and strategic advisor on entrepreneurship, along with other education and commercialization experts.

“Independent inventors do the hard part—creating something new, better, or easier and then get stuck figuring out what comes next. This course walks you through the practical decisions that turn a patent into a successful business: validating the problem/solution space, building a team you trust, accessing capital, and choosing a path to market that fits your resources.”

– George Peters, CEO, New England Invents
